HISTORY

HOME TO THE 2014 & 2016 DIV II STATE CHAMPS

ZONA BASEBALL started in 1998 when Ryan Holtorf put together a competitive summer team comprised of future junior college players who had just graduated from high school. The goal of this team was to stay competitive through the last summer before college by traveling around the Southwest, playing the best teams in the best tournaments. Matt Denny was the shortstop of this team and Trent Otis was the second baseman. These two were roommates on road trips and made a bond that went beyond the typical SS/2B connection.
Otis and Denny matched up again in the middle infield at Grand Canyon University, where they were again roommates and set the NCAA record for double plays turned in a season.

Once their playing days were over, the passion in both of them was to teach the game that they loved. The way they knew they could be successful was to work as a team and do it together. In 2010 the Zona and Grand Canyon middle infield duo connected again as coaches at Greenway HS, where Denny was already the head coach.

Since this connection the team has thrived (mostly because of really good players & great assistant coaches). Since 2010, Greenway has since been apart of 5 final fours in the State Tournament, including one runner-up and the 2014 & 2016 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.  Matt Denny and Trent Otis won the State Coaching staff of the Year award in 2014 & 2016 as well as the Region Coaching Staff of the year in 2016 and were nominated for the National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2016. Matt Denny is currently the Head Baseball Coach at Mountain Pointe High School and Trent Otis is his hitting/infield coach.

This success has been all about team work, consistency in coaching , a mutual love for the game and a dedication to player development. ZONA BASEBALL INSTRUCTION was created to take that passion and knowledge and pass it on. Now we can instruct year round and reach a multitude of baseball players with hands on instruction.
